The Odds Are Long
(words & music by Markus Rill)

I learned this expression from a book but I can't remember which. An old song of mine that I'd always liked the lyric of but I'd grown a bit tired of the music. For the last couple shows before going into the studio we'd learned Buddy Holly's "Not Fade Away". So it occurred to me to let this song undergo the Diddley-beat treatment. I spent a whole weekend trying to make it work. It was the very last song we learned before we went in to record the album. Rob Collomb helped out on harmonica and sound engineer and mastering main man Andy Balaskas managed to sing the high harmony.
It's like tryin' to ride north on a southbound train
Like tryin' to stay dry in the pourin' rain
No matter what I do
I can't escape the memory of you

And the days just roll on past
but I got memory refills in my glass
Someday I might be strong
But the odds are long

I think of you every now and again
I got your name tattooed on the knuckles of my hand
Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't want to give up on you
I can't think straight when I'm drunk, when I'm sober I get confused

So I pour another one down
makes it easier to believe to you might come back around
you might come back where you belong
but the odds are long

It's like tryin' to ride north on a southbound train
Like tryin' to stay dry in the pourin' rain
Someday, somewhere on some radio you might hear this song
Might make you wanna come back but I know the odds are long
